A few years ago, I spent about a week of summer holiday with my friends in Okinawa. It's the most southern region of Japan. Okinawa consists of some islands, so you have to use ships to go to others after you came to centre of Okinawa, but I think they worth visiting. The islands I have ever visited were really fantastic, although I have been to Okinawa twice. And also, all of islands are so small that you can drive everywhere if you rent a car.

Okinawa is quite different place from others of Japan. First of all, you can forget time especially if you are city guys. All of Okinawa are slow pace and I have heard that you could get delayed time even if you have meeting, So I love Okinawa. The place, however, has other aspects as well. For all of Japanese are taught in school or school trip that Okinawa has been occupied in America when The World War 2 had. When we go to Okinawa in school trip, we have to visit the places to escape from bomb and musium of history of Japan.

We did nothing special in Okinawa. We did only driving somewhere, jumping into really beautiful sea, and drinking Okinawa alcohol. The alcohol is called "Awamori". It's so strong and taste is quite strange that it's not my kind of thing, but we drunk too much. In Okinawa, you don't have to think of anything. You can use time in vain and in luxury.

The Chinese name is called 沖繩島 .
ReplyDeleteThe USA army stayed in Okinawa .
ReplyDeleteDid you see them ?
Yeah, there's still a big US army base there, isn't there? It was originally stationed there as part of the MacArthur pact, I think. I know there have been tensions between local residents and the US troops over the years.
DeleteAnyway, thanks for this kenzo. Okinawa looks amazing: like a very good place to retire to. It reminded me of my time in Bali - a place where time aslows down and you don't need to rush and the pace of life is much slower and you can just reklax and forget about the stress of your day-to-day life.
I'm quite curious to try AWAMORI as well.
What's it made from?
And how strong is it?
Yes, there is. It must be horrible. Until last year, Japan and America was disputing about army base: abolishment or moving it to remote place or maintain. But this answer was prolonged to 2014 temporarily. It will be difficult for each other to agree.
ReplyDeleteI searched in Japanese, but I couldn't understand in detail! It seems to ferment Thai rice and this is a kind of "Shochu". Have you heard of it? Maybe Alcohol is 30 to 40 degree.
